Emir of Ilorin and chairman Kwara State Traditional Council ,Alh Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, on Monday called for the renaming of University of Ilorin after the late Sheik Sheu Alimi.
Citing the example of Uthman Dandfodio University, Sokoto and Bayero University, Kano, that enjoyed similar stautus, the royal father, said Ilorin deserved same status in view of the contribution of late Sheik Alimi to promoting of knowledge and scholarship.
The Emir made the call when he received in audience, the management of the University of Ilorin who paid him homage in his palace as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary od the establishment of the University led by the chairman of its governing council, surveyor Abiodun Aluko.
He praised the management and students of the University for ensuring a stabel academic calendar that has made the university the most sort after, but reiterated that he will be happy to see the renaming of the University after the late Sheik Sheu Alimi.
Alhaji Sulu- Gambari said while the management of the university deserved commendation for ensuring a smooth runing of the institution, “it shows that students attending the University equally have good parents who raised mormally upright children who obey the school rules and regulations”.
“The university has given us a lot of prestige outside Ilorin and is not our marking, it Allah, I am happy abput it.
“I will be the happiest person the day the name of the University is changed to Sheu Alimi University”, the Emir said.
Earlier speaking , chairman, governing council of the university, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko had congratulated the Emir of Ilorin for attaining 30 years on the throne of his forefathers.
He said the reing of the Emir had brought peace and ensure stable academic calendar for the University. “Ilorin has given this University a good reputaion all the world, unlike in some other places where Universities have land crisis with their host communities, we have no crisis over land . The University is the most peaceful ,most sort after and better by far”, Aluko said. .
Also speaking , vice chancellor of the University, professor Wahab Egbewole ,SAN, congratulated the Emir on his 30h years anniversary on the throne of his forefathers recalling that 9th Emir of Ilorin and late father of the current Emir, Alhaji Sulukanaini Gambari Aiyelabowo ,made the establishment of the University possible by providing huge expanse of land while on the throne 50 years ago.
Egbewole said the University under his watche “will continue do anything that will uplift the Emirate”
