FG Abolishes Common Entrance Exams, Introduces Continuous Assessment and Student Tracking for Pupils

The Federal Government has revealed plans to discontinue the traditional common entrance examination used for transitioning pupils from primary school to junior secondary school (JSS). This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a media briefing in Lagos.

According to the minister, the existing exam system will be replaced with a Continuous Assessment (CA) model. This new approach will evaluate pupils based on their academic performance throughout their primary school years, starting from Primary One. He explained that the assessment record will remain with each pupil and can be transferred if the child changes schools, ensuring continuity in academic evaluation.

In addition, the government is set to roll out a Learner Identification Number (LIN) for every student at the primary level. This initiative is designed to help authorities monitor students’ academic journeys more effectively and improve retention rates through to senior secondary education.

The minister also noted that efforts are underway to revive the national school feeding programme. Oversight of the initiative will be reassigned from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen supervision and enhance its impact in encouraging enrolment in public schools.
