UNILORIN, NCF PARTNER TO SET UP CONSERVATION PARK ON CAMPUS

The University of Ilorin and Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a five-hectare conservation park within the campus.

The agreement was sealed on Monday at the University of Ilorin, with both institutions outlining plans to also promote youth engagement in environmental conservation, and register UNILORIN students as members of the NCF.

Speaking at the ceremony, Wahab Egbewole, vice-chancellor of UNILORIN, said the collaboration reflects the institution’s commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

Egbewole said the partnership will also drive joint research and project development, including carbon assessment of the university’s forest resources.

The partnership reflects our commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and conservation in our university,” he said.

“We commend NCF, a critical stakeholder, for this unique partnership that enhances our efforts on environmental conservation and sustainable development. We look forward to working with NCF to create a positive impact on our campus and beyond.”

Joseph Onoja, director-general of NCF, described the initiative as a step that would strengthen conservation advocacy and provide practical learning opportunities for students.

The deliberate steps and efforts of the University of Ilorin are commendable,” Onoja said.

Having conservation efforts on the ground will go a long way in amplifying our advocacy for nature conservation.

“Partnerships like this will boost our demonstration efforts, provide a training ground, and serve as a practical learning centre for university students on forest resources management.”

Onoja noted that the initiative aligns with its long-standing work with schools and tertiary institutions to develop conservation-focused curricula and activities aimed at raising environmentally conscious students.

The foundation added that conservation parks in tertiary institutions represent a practical approach to advancing environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
