SSANU, NASU SUSPENDS INDEFINITE STRIKE; ANNOUNCES RESUMPTION DATE

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to suspend its ongoing nationwide strike, following renewed engagements with the Federal Government.

In a circular dated May 5, 2026, and addressed to branch chairmen across universities and inter-university centres, the unions disclosed that the decision followed a series of high-level meetings with government representatives over the lingering issues surrounding the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

According to the statement, the JAC leadership held a crucial meeting with the Federal Government’s Expanded Renegotiation Committee, chaired by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, where discussions centered on addressing outstanding demands of union members.

The committee reportedly emphasized the need to secure final approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before any revised government offer can be finalized.

Following what was described as “exhaustive deliberations,” the unions revealed that the Government has committed to concluding all renegotiations within two weeks after the strike is suspended. This includes a review of financial components such as CONTISS/CONTTAS-related adjustments.

The unions specifically proposed that the strike be suspended effective Monday, May 11, 2026, while negotiations continue.
