The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made to enable Nigerians reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and honour the sacrifices of individuals who contributed to the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
The Federal Government urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote peace, unity, patriotism, and support for democratic institutions. Citizens were also encouraged to reflect on the progress made under democratic rule and recommit themselves to nation-building.
As part of the observance, government offices, educational institutions, banks, and many private establishments across the country are expected to suspend normal operations for the day.
