Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday officially installed the Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU). The investiture took place at the State House Banquet Hall, Alausa, Ikeja.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the appointment as both historic and strategic, noting that it marked the first time a traditional ruler would serve as LASU Chancellor since the university’s establishment. He emphasized that the move reflects the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in governance, social cohesion, and moral leadership.
“This appointment is both deliberate and historic. Beyond ceremony, the Chancellor is a moral compass and ambassador of the university’s ideals,” the governor said. He added that Oba Ogunsanwo’s record of service, commitment to development, and cultural contributions qualified him for the role.
The investiture was attended by members of the LASU Governing Council, management officials, and other traditional rulers. Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the chancellorship represents “a convergence of tradition and modernity,” essential for sustainable institutional growth, stability, and renewed prestige.
Oba Ogunsanwo, a former chairman of the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service, succeeds Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), who completed his tenure. The appointment is in accordance with the Lagos State University Law, 2004 (as amended), which empowers the Visitor to appoint a Chancellor for a renewable five-year term.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, described the appointment as a blend of “intellect, heritage, and higher learning,” noting that Oba Ogunsanwo’s leadership is expected to strengthen LASU’s moral and intellectual fabric.
In his acceptance remarks, Oba Ogunsanwo pledged to collaborate with the Visitor, Governing Council, and university management to uphold LASU’s values, consolidate its growth, and enhance its prestige.
