The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNICROSS chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike action following the alleged failure of the university management to implement agreed salary structures and improve lecturers’ welfare.
According to the union, lecturers are being owed unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, and outstanding wage awards dating back to 2011. ASUU also accused the institution’s management of failing to remit check-off dues owed to the union since 2017.
Speaking on the development, the branch chairman, Dr Patrick Ushie, disclosed that several meetings with the university management ended without any meaningful resolution, as the institution claimed insufficient funds to meet the demands.
The union maintained that the strike action will remain in effect until all outstanding issues are fully addressed. Efforts to reach the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francesca Bassey, for comments were reportedly unsuccessful.
