The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has confirmed the receipt of a total of ₦1.57 billion in student loan disbursements from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), benefiting more than 7,300 students under the Federal Government’s student loan initiative.

This was disclosed in an official correspondence issued by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, acknowledging the payments made under the students’ loan programme.
According to the breakdown provided by the institution, the funds were released in two tranches within January 2026. The first tranche, disbursed on January 19, amounted to ₦1,326,550,000, benefiting 6,308 students, while the second tranche, released on January 29, totaled ₦246,165,000, covering 1,058 students.

The university authorities described the intervention as a significant boost to access to higher education, particularly for students facing financial constraints. The Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to NELFUND for its continued support, noting that the scheme has played a vital role in easing the financial burden on students.
“We appreciate your continued support in facilitating access to education for our students,” the university stated in the letter, reaffirming its commitment to student welfare and academic continuity.
The University of Lagos reiterated its readiness to continue collaborating with NELFUND to ensure that eligible students benefit from the scheme in a timely and transparent manner.
